Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an essential factor contributing to the health, comfort, and productivity of your building’s occupants. Poor indoor air quality at minimum causes headaches, sneezing, breathing problems, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Depending on the pollutant and length of exposure, poor indoor air quality can lead to severe health effects including death.
According to Health Canada, there are three main types of air pollutants that contribute to poor indoor air quality:
Mould and fungi
Bacteria (such as legionella)
Dust mites
Pollen and spores (known as aeroallergens)
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Formaldehyde
Lead
Asbestos
Ozone
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Dust or particles (particulate matter)
Radon
